Pension funds and living standards in old age

This presentation examines the evolution of living standards and the incidence of low income among older citizens in Iceland since the turn of the millennium, drawing on administrative data from Statistics Iceland. The evidence suggests that the material well-being of the elderly has improved substantially over this period, with declining low-income rates indicating remarkable success in reducing poverty within this demographic. The analysis considers a range of explanatory factors, but the findings suggest that the primary driver of this development has been the expansion of pension entitlements and rights among the elderly population.
